Title: ‘Little Doll’

Artist: Spider Heart

Who: a tremendous four-headed guitar firing and rocking hurricane from Oakland, California. Formed in 2011 with lyrics spitting frontwoman May Black as an irresistible magnet…

They love: The Stooges, The Cramps, The White Stripes, Patti Smith, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Babes in Toyland…

Work: debut album ‘Under The Gun’  (2013)

Music Is the Dope: Wham Bam… ‘Little Doll’ is a frontal punk rock attack… a fury… n.o.  m.e.r.c.y.!…

From left to right: Rip Reed (guitars), May Black (vocals/guitars), Juli Sherry (bass) and Julien Bloit (drums)…

Pretty impressed with the ‘Under The Gun’ album I overcame my immense fear of spiders and got in touch with the band to chat about David Lynch, killers and war… eh, pleased to meet you…

What’s the story behind the band’s name?    Rip Reed: “It’s tough love. Something mean that has it’s own vulnerability.”

'Little Doll’ is ‘Track of the Day’. What is the song about?
May Black:  ”Honestly it is about me, not liking myself very much and trying to be someone else. When I wrote it I did not really intend for it to be a song I was just writing as a catharsis, sort of mocking myself in a way. I think we all have those ‘the grass is greener on the other side’ moments, that is pretty much what it is about. “

May Black’s voice gives the songs an extra angry edge. A mix of Patti Smith, Courtney Love and PJ Harvey vocals. Who would she choose to do a duet with and which song would they cover?
May Black: “Patti Smith for sure. She is one of my biggest inspirations. The song, well first we would do ‘Outside of Society’ and then we would cover Bob Dylan’s ‘Masters of War’.”

What movie would have debut album ‘Under The Gun’ as soundtrack?      Rip Reed: “Lost Highway, I love David Lynch films… or Natural Born Killers. I wanted to do a video for the song ‘Voodoo’ that was loosely based on the desert scene from Natural Born Killers.”.

Suppose you can pick anyone… what band or artist would you to do a world tour with and why?      Rip Reed: ”The Kills. They’re completely unique in their approach to what is the root of their songs. They take it to a whole new place.”

Juli Sherry: “St. Vincent. She sounds pretty but has a streak of craziness.”

What’s on the agenda in 2014?
Rip Reed: “We’re releasing a new EP in the Spring. It will be quite different from the ‘UTG’ Album. It will take us into new dynamic territory. The songs on this new EP span the range from dirges and murder ballads to furious and fast punk rock.”

Thank you for this Q & A… and don’t forget to bring your thunder to Europe this year…
